The Netherlands are the biggest Tulip-exporters in the world, every year more than 1.7 billion pieces are exported. The Dutch are crazy with tulips and way back back in the ‘Golden age’ we had the ‘Tulipmania‘ period. Having a tulip-bulb was a status symbol in those days. After the Dutch people ,French and British people are fond of Tulips.

Citizens picking their Tulips

In Holland the Tulip Season starts on the third thursday of Januari. and to celebrate this a big tulip field of over 2500 m2 is displayed on Amsterdam City-centre Dam-square in front of Her Majesty’s Palace. And last year ( the first time of this venue ) over 10.000 people took the chance to pick their own Tulip-bouquet.

Tulips are available from late autumn until spring, but they are also available year-round ,these are ‘Ice-Tulips wich means they are drawn for cultivation. Every tulip-bulb needs a cold period before blooming ,this is done in big Tulip-breeders companies in special cooling-storages.

Mayor of Amsterdam Eberhard van der Laan was the first person last Januari to pick his fresh tulips from Amsterdam Dam-square and many followed,next Januari we wait for 200.000 new fresh tulips to come. The real ” Tulips from Amsterdam”.
